The Right Sentence

The Right Sentence

As the dust now settles on the jail sentences handed out to the Pakistan cricketers, and the world has had its say, it would appear to me that the right conclusions have been made by the judge.  On the one hand these are stiff sentences when you consider certainly two of the three jailed men would never have played International cricket again anyway.  In the cold light of day though, I think it is fairly evident that the various bans handed out over the years by the ICC have not been enough to deter either match fixers or spot fixers, but now with the prospect of a fixer facing a custodial sentence, this may be just the deterrent that the world of cricket has been looking for.

On a couple of separate issues, unbelievable news from Melbourne overnight where Shane Warne has confirmed he will make a comeback for his beloved Melbourne team in the Big Bash over Christmas.  Having retired from the IPL at the end of May, it was assumed that the world’s batsmen would no longer be tormented by the master leg spinner, but I guess the lure of big crowds in Melbourne was too much for him.

In Delhi, the Indian batsmen seem to have the upper hand in the first Test Match against the West Indies and with Dravid and Tendulkar in the crease, the remaining 100 or so runs that are required look well within their reach.  Sachin is still marooned on 99 international 100s, I do not think it will be this game that he achieves his 100th hundred but looking at him bat today he seems in very good touch, so keep an eye on the next game.
