Injury earns Shahzad call into England one-day squad

Ajmal is a strong addition to the squad - and he'll no doubt be looking to build on his maiden ODI appearance for England in Bangladesh over the winter.

Ajmal Shahzad has earned a surprise call-up to England’s one-day international squad following an injury to left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom.

The 24-year-old Yorkshire all-rounder, who made an impressive debut in the second Test against Bangladesh at Old Trafford recently, had been overlooked for the original 13-man squad to face Scotland in Edinburgh on Saturday followed by a five-match one-day international series against Australia.

But before the squad even assembled, Nottinghamshire seamer Sidebottom was forced to withdraw with a left hamstring strain to allow Shahzad to join ISM stablemate Craig Kieswetter in the one-day party.

“It's a shame Ryan has picked up this injury, because he's been injury-free for some time now and bowling well,” said Geoff Miller, England’s National Selector. “Thankfully it's a relatively minor injury, and we look forward to him making a full recovery soon.

“Ajmal is a strong addition to the squad - and he'll no doubt be looking to build on his maiden ODI appearance for England in Bangladesh over the winter.”

Shahzad  took a wicket with his third ball in his only one-day international to date as he returned figures of 1-55 in helping England beat Bangladesh by 45 runs in Chittagong in March.
